OUR MISSION

You are witnessing the first phase in the design of a long-needed service for the Southeast Louisiana area. The idea of starting a web site to provide as much information as possible about the churches of New Orleans and the surrounding area, came to me in late-2001 when I was trying to find information and photographs of churches for an organists' convention. After searching the Web for countless hours, I realized that, despite having one of the richest religious heritages in the world, the New Orleans, Louisiana area had very little information, publicly available, about its houses of worship.

A few of our area congregations date back to before the founding of America. Rich information exists, just on corner stones, markers and in the architecture of some of our older church structures. From an architectural standpoint, many of our churches exhibit pure style in the various "ages" of architectural development. Construction materials and craftsmanship of every type are here for everyone to see. Unfortunately, many of the congregations and clergy have not had the means to properly publicize their treasures, or in some cases, they may be afraid to advertise locally because of fear of attracting persons who come not to worship or admire, but to do evil deeds.

The New Orleans area is supported by tourism. Our city, and the surrounding parishes, welcome visitors from several cruise ship lines, numerous airline flights, as well as those who visit by train or car. We believe that people coming to visit our French Quarter, casinos and Superdome may also want to visit the historic churches which set the grounds for developing the cultures one finds in this unique area. Until this site came on line in late 2002, there was no single web resource to point both visitors and locals to all churches in the area. In this day of electronic information, many of our churches did not even have a web presence or email address until this site was established. Simply stated, our MISSION is to provide a single Web source of church information for Southeast Louisiana.

In my travels, I have set a personal goal to photograph and publish a page on every church that allows me to do so. I have also made available space for the respective pastors or clergy to post service schedules, history of the congregation, and contact information. While this is a personal endeavor by two people, we will still pledge to publish, as quickly as humanly possible, any information which is sent to us by the designated representative of any church in our service area. We are also attempting to make this a site which documents information on the historic organs in some of our churches. Hopefully, this will fill a void that now exists, in getting information held by the Organ Historical Society and other organizations, out where people can associate a certain organ specification with the associated church.

I welcome suggestions on how this site can be improved. Email jdemajo@demajo.net with any suggestions or with information to be posted. I also welcome participation from church leadership in the various religions, to use this site for the benefit of your congregations. This is your site. It is your chance to advertise and market your churches for free. Please take advantage of our services, that's what we are here for.
